| Forward - My father has deep memories of his role in WWII. These, as he states; he will never forget. This book of memoirs is reminiscent of his thoughts and emotions as well as a brief accounting of his operational duties. He will not boast about his medals; but I have included them in the pages that follow. Dad wrote this book to share his experiences as a mid-upper gunner in the European Theatre of World War II. I am sure words cannot convey the gruesome events that he saw. I cannot pretend to understand my father's heavy heart, nor the fear that he endured. The horror of witnessing human loss in war is beyond my comprehension. I am in awe of his courage and selflessness and I thank him for sharing his memories with us. I am honoured to have assisted my father in compiling his book of memoirs. - Kathi Gingrich. |
Author Bio: I was born in late winter 1922, in Montreal, Quebec, to Italian immigrants. In 1926, my family moved to a small city in southeastern Ontario, on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. Here I received my primary and high school education. I also studied Machine Shop in Galt, Ontario, until the day I volunteered to serve my country during WW2. Graduating as an air gunner, I then served as a mid-upper gunner on 4-engine bombers on the European Continent. A crash midway through my second tour of operations deteriorated my health, which also jeopardized the safety and welfare of the air-craft and crew. I decided to resign from operational duties. I took an instructor's course and taught new gunnery recruits for six months before being sent home to Canada, where I was discharged. Going back to work at my old job as a machinist, I was able to attend university extension courses to improve my abilities. It was at this time, when I met and married a local girl. My wife, Rose, and I live in Cambridge, Ontario in the brick, cottage-type house that we both designed and built. Here, we raised our two daughters, who in turn became the apples of my eye. I am blessed with two lovely grandchildren and three great grandchildren that manage to keep me on my toes. Rose and I retired. In June 2006, we will celebrate our 59th wedding anniversary. I have slowed down, but continue to stay busy in my small rose and vegetable gardens. |
